Donor policy

What your gift funds

Gifts are applied to programme delivery: refurbishing library spaces, furniture, book stock, cataloguing systems and staff training in the schools we work with, together with the monitoring and follow-up that keeps those libraries open.

Where you fund a specific item — a shelf, a collection, a whole library — we assign it to a named school and report to you on that school. If a named project cannot proceed (for example, a school withdraws), we will contact you and either reassign your gift to a comparable project with your agreement, or refund it.

Tax receipts

We cannot currently issue official donation receipts for income tax purposes. AVID's application for registered-charity status with the Canada Revenue Agency is in progress. Under Canadian law, only a registered charity may issue official donation receipts, and we will not state or imply otherwise.

For a gift made today you receive a written acknowledgement of the gift and a report naming the school it funded. Once registration is granted we will say so clearly on this site, and receipting will begin for gifts made from that date forward. A gift made before registration cannot be receipted retroactively.

Refunds

If you make a gift in error, or change your mind, email applications@theavidfoundation.org within 30 days and we will refund it in full, provided the funds have not already been disbursed to a project. Recurring gifts can be cancelled at any time and take effect before the next payment.

Anonymity and recognition

We name sponsors on a library's record only where the donor has asked us to. The default is that we do not publish your name. If you would like recognition, or would like it removed later, tell us and we will change it.

What a gift does not confer

A donation does not give a donor authority over which schools we select, which books we place, or how a project is run. Our board retains decision-making authority over all our resources — a requirement of Canadian charity law and, we think, the right way round. We welcome conversation and we do not accept direction.

We decline gifts where accepting them would compromise our independence, our safeguarding obligations, or the interests of the schools we serve.

Applications

Submitting a school application does not create any agreement between us and does not guarantee selection. We assess every application on need and eligibility, and we reply to all of them.
